Life in México--part 1

July 27, 2011 my awesome family moved to Queretaro, Mexico.  Wait. What? Yes I know.  It was my senior year in highschool and I packed it up and moved with my family to Mexico.  Not New Mexico.  The old one.  ;)

People always ask me if that was awful moving my senior year. My answer? Naw.  I didn’t enjoy Mt. Crest.  I didn’t really have my “best friend” that I would hang out with.  In fact, I’d call Lindsie every day during lunch and talk to her while she watched Mickey Mouse Club House.  It would be fun.  I would graduate down there.  I would learn Spanish.  I would get a “new start” at making friends and making these awesome adventures.

Boy was I in for a surprise!  We arrived in Mexico on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 between 8 & 9 PM.  Oh did we look silly! 7 Americans, one poodle, 7-8 suitcases and 14 carry-on’s. (2 per person) You can only imagine what we looked like trying to get through security. (Also know that this was the first time that Allie, Kendal, Jason, Lindsie and I had ever been on a plane..let alone going through security..) They opened every one of our suitcases and went through them, they went through our carry-on’s, and poor Tallie! (our escapoo) She was looked over for like a half an hour! Our real estate lady, Nalleli, met us at the airport.  This is where we were introduced to the “kiss”.  The kiss is how they greet people.  When you are saying hello, you put your cheek with theirs and make a kiss sound.  Again, imagine our poor faces.  We were being violated! Ha just kidding.  But it was definitely weird!  After my mom, dad and Nalleli figured our car situation out, my dad and I drove to Walmart while Nalleli took my mom and siblings to our house.  Dad and I were on a bed hunt.  We bought 7 air mattresses. (the extra small ones on accident too..) It was so weird.  I walked into Walmart and people were staring at me like they’ve never seen a white girl before.  Granted, I am extra white, but still!  I felt so small.  I couldn’t read a single thing in the store and the prices were high! A mattress was $150.00 pesos. (roughly $15.00 USD) It was just so different.  I have never been the minority before && I didn’t like it.
                                                       eating tacos, July 27, 2011. 11:30 PM..ish

When we got back to our house in Jurica, Nalleli, my mom and the kids where there, but there was no light.  Elsa (who was another agent of some sort) was there trying to help us get the lights on.  We got the lights on and realized that we were starving! We hadn’t eaten since grandmas house that morning.  (we spent the night in Brigham with Grandma Karen because we had to be up so early.) Nalleli took us to Juriquilla were we experienced our first midnight, street tacos.  Legit, authentic tacos.  Oh they were so good! Nalleli told us that they put lime on everything, which is 110% true! It took me a while to get used to lime, I had put some on my tacos that night and my tummy didn’t exactly agree with them.  Again, people stared.  There sat 7 Americans with their dog, eating tacos, speaking English, at 1 AM.  When we left the taco place (which btw was one of our most FAVORITE places to eat throughout our stay there) we had to stop and get some toilet paper from some random store on the way home.  We got home, filled the air mattresses and went to sleep.  What a long, exhausting day.

I woke up to Jason and Lindsie jumping on my air mattress, telling me to come and look at my bedroom.  Since I was the oldest, I got my own room.  It was on the other side of the house, away from the other bedrooms.  I was in the maids quarters. Clearly my room was already the coolest.  I remember walking through the house just amazed.  It was so beautiful.  4 bedrooms.  4 ½ bath.  Beautiful yard.  Walking outside and looking down our street was so cool.  Everything was in bloom and it smelled amazing.  We didn’t have any food.  We didn’t have a fridge yet, so dad took Allie and I to McDonalds to get food for everyone.  The first time I had a Big Mac was at the McDonalds in Mexico.  We got lost on our way home, but thankfully my dad got us back! We went to the store to try and find the things that we needed since we wouldn’t have our stuff that we shipped from home, for 3 months.  We bought a fridge, and we bought some food.  Our first week was hectic, but awesome. All I remember thinking is: I could really learn to love this place.
