Mexico -- Part 2

Oh my heavens…this is turning out to be just like my journal.  I say I’m going to write ALL the time, and then I don’t.  Remember how I said I would write about Mexico in sections?  Well, here’s part 2.

Our first week there was slightly…….chaotic.  We had one car.  We had no fridge.  We had 7 wrong-sized air mattress.  BUT we had each other.  During this 20 month excursion that my family went on, I will come to learn one thing:  My family is everything.  Growing up I was always very protective of my siblings.  I got even more overprotective while in Mexico.  I was terrified for all of us to go to school there.  What if someone teases my siblings for being white? For being tall or for being blonde? My biggest concern was that we were going to be teased for being Mormon.  Allie and Lindsie could handle themselves.  Any kidnapper would hand them right back.  My brothers however, are the sweetest things ever.  They’re the ones I worried about.

For the first week that we were there, mom had to drive dad to work.  Mom and dad could always tell where they were.  I on the other hand could barely tell which way was up.  We were really bored.  School didn’t start for about a month, and we didn’t really dare go anywhere without dad.  I remember one of the first nights we were there, mom and dad had gone grocery shopping and left us there at home.  All of a sudden we heard these big bangs! The house shook.  Tallie (our dog) was freaking out, barking.  Lindsie and Jason were crying.  We could have sworn it was gun shots.  I tried to call my dad, but of course I couldn’t remember the area code..  So what did I do? I used my noggin and I shoved us all under a desk that was in the front room, and guarded it with air mattress.  Not that they would have helped if someone broke in, but it made us feel better.  If we can’t see outside, they can’t see us inside.  Right?! Turns out, it was just fireworks. :)

Before we started school, we had to take a test to get into school.  May I add that this was an AMERICAN SCHOOL.  I was American.  Why did I have to test to get in?!  I WAS THE AMERICAN!  So testing we went.  We had to read, write, do math and draw some stupid picture.  Results came back.  GREAT! …for Allie, Kendal and Lindsie.  What about Jason and I? Well….we didn’t quite make the cut.  I was furious.  They failed me because I drew stick figures..which in my defense…my stick figures are VERY cute.  We talked to the school and they ended up letting me come.. if we paid more money.  However, Jason wasn’t so lucky. They didn’t want to let him into their school because they were afraid that he would drop their overall scores as a school.  That made me even madder. I’ve always felt some sort of connection to Jason. (Especially after I dropped him on his face when he was 3 months old..haha..)  We act the exact same.  We both have ADHD, we both think the same things are funny, we’re two peas in a pod. He just won’t admit it yet :)

We didn’t really agree on letting Kendal, Allie, Lindsie and I go to the same school, and Jason be all by himself.  It made me sick to think about it.  So we mixed it up a little bit.  Kendal, Jason and Lindsie went to ISQ (International School of Queretaro) and Allie and I went to JFK. (John F. Kennedy)

Mine and Allie's first day of school was nothing like I even thought it would be.  I was not ready to be a part of the minority class, and it hit me pretty hard.  We attended our first day and it was instantly noticed by everyone that there is a 5’10 white girl walking around with a 5’5 blonde girl.  People already knew that we were from the states.  The next task for them was to find out which state we came from.  The first two people to talk to us were two boys.  They were in my “generation”, or grade.  The first one had perfect English.  He was American.  The second one is what we called a “Fresa”.  In American terms, a stuck up brat.  (to put it nicely..) The American was polite to Allie and I.  He was from a neighboring state.  The Fresa however, threw me for a loop.  The American asked us which state we were from to which we both replied, Utah.  Instantly the Fresa asked us “Are you Mormon?”  Of course we said yes! And he walked away.. That was very difficult for me. I hadn’t even been there a whole day and I was already being judged. I knew instantly that I was going to be a minority.  I came from a school where probably 90% of us were Mormon, to having my sister, 2 teachers and I the only ones on campus that were LDS.  This was about to be a long senior year.
Since Allie and I didn’t know any Spanish, they put us in a program called “SWAS”.  It stands for School Within A School.  SWAS was my safe haven.  I could go there and feel completely normal.  There were other American’s there that were going through the same thing that I was going through.  The only difference is they were like average 9-10 years old.  We became best buddies.

Remember how I said I was super protective of my siblings? Well Allie branched out more than what I wanted her too.  I didn’t want her to go hang out with these people.  What if something happened to her? Long story short, I didn’t interact with my fellow classmates as much as I would have liked to.  I didn’t go on my senior class trip.  I didn’t go to parties (which was 100% my choice! There was lots of alcohol..) I didn’t go “hang out” with them after school or go get Starbucks.  I stayed at home.  With my family. Allie went on her class trip for a week. And she went on a week trip for a soccer tournament.  I struggled with that.  I had to go to early morning seminary all by myself at 5:30 in the morning.  I had to go to school by myself.  I had to be alone.  From the first day of school until Christmas break  I didn’t hang out with anyone.  I sat by myself at lunch.  Usually Allie would sit with me.  Or Butch. (our other American friend) but once Allie and Butch started to make friends, I just sat there.  To be honest, I didn’t really mind it.  It was no different than at Mountain Crest in my opinion.  I minded my own business.  I ate by myself and I went to class by myself.  It was routine for me.  The second half of the year I branched out a little bit more.  I made friends that I hope to keep for a lifetime.

I felt bad for Kendal, Jason and Lindsie.  They weren’t getting the education that they deserved.  Kendal got teased a lot by kids at school.  They knew that he was Mormon and they would purposely come and say the F word in his ear.  Even when he’d politely ask them to stop.  He’d come home crying and hurt and it would make me so mad.  I could have killed every one of those kids.  Jason and Lindsie made lifetime friends. Some of them were even in our ward at church.  Kendal had great friends at ISQ too.  Ones that were nice.  In the end he did end up transferring to JFK for his second year of school down there.

Every weekend down there, we spent it together as a family.  We’d go explore some new place.  We’d go to the mercados (little, tiny stores ).  We’d hang out and grow closer together.  We’d eat gorditas and we’d go to the water parks.  We went to the Zoo and to the beach.  Our “trip” to Mexico, was probably the best thing that could have happened to our family.  We were forced to be together instead of out with friends.  I am very grateful for my family.  I don’t know where I would be without them.

Estoy muy agradecida por mi familia y por todo lo que hicieron para mi cuando vivimos en Mexico.  Yo he aprendido que la familia es la cosa mas importante en todo el mundo.

50 years?!

50 YEARS!

My Grandma and Grandpa Jackson were married September 21, 1964.  My grandpa was 16. Grandma was 19.  They have 5 fabulous children.  Chad, Brandon, Jaden, Krey and Kendra.  22 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  This weekend we celebrated those 50 years that they have been together.  We met at the Roberts Community Center and had a little fiesta.  We took family pictures together. (It’s not very often that you can get EVERYONE from the Jackson side to meet at one place to get a decent picture, but we did!) After pictures we just hung around the event for a while.  We watched a video of my grandparent’s life together that my dad created.  We ate ice-cream and we talked. A lot.
It was so neat to be able to see pictures of my grandparent’s growing up together.  The camping trips they went on, trips to Disneyland, trips to Florida.  I told Devin that I now want a camera for Christmas so that we can take pictures of us doing things.  Other than selfies ;) hopefully that will be happening..:)

Other than going to Idaho, nothing much has happened.  School’s started back up so Dev is busy with homework, I’m still working.  Our families are doing well.  Dev is wishing that it was May so that he doesn’t have to be in school anymore.  I was wishing it was the holidays.  I love decorating for family parties so I am super anxious to hold a holiday party!! Other than that not a whole lot is going on in our little Fabricius family.

JULY??

Holy cow.  What a month July has been! Devin and I have been going nonstop and it has been so much fun.  On the Fourth of July we went to Idaho Falls with Devin’s family.  We left and stopped at Wendy’s and ate.  I had a barbeque chicken salad and it was delicious! So good! I highly recommend it.  Devin had couple hamburgers.  I swear to you he is still growing!  After Wendy’s, we went to the hotel and it was GORGEOUS! It was so pretty! We were so lucky because the hotel that we stayed at (HILTON GARDEN INN) their back property that ran along the canal taped off just for the guests staying there. We had great seats to see the fireworks.  Before the fireworks we went to Bear World.  Have you ever been there?! Holy tolito.  It. Was. Awesome.  I wanted to cuddle with every animal there. Oh they were so darn cute! We went back to Idaho Falls and ate at Jakers.  Their steak was incredible.  The juiciest steak I have ever eaten. (besides Devin’s of course!)  The fireworks were great.  They were so bright and fun and we really enjoyed the time we spent with Devin’s Family.

A week after the Fourth (9-13) we went to Denver to see Devin’s mission companion and his wife.  Devin and Kyle spent 5 months together in their mission.  They were robbed together, shot at together, had a knife to them together.  You name it – it happened.  So we figured it was only appropriate that they spend their “2 year anniversary” together.  Make sense, right? We thought so. J  We drove to Rock Springs, WY on Wednesday.  That hotel was the scariest thing I have ever stayed in.  5:30 in the morning Devin could have sworn that someone was in our room.  So he got out of bed and couldn’t see anyone.  He followed the noise and led him right to the window.  He swung the blinds open and some guy was just staring at him.  He closed those blinds so dang fast! Ugh I was so scared haha I had NO idea what the heck was going on.. I was so ready to go and chew someone at the front desk out for having someone outside our window, at 5:30 doing remodeling.. but I couldn’t.  Devin and I had failed to miss the sign that said “please excuse the workers, we are remodeling our hotel” or something like that.  Needless to say we didn’t really sleep that well that first night.  We drove the rest of the way to Denver and boy was it long! We stopped in Loveland and did a little shopping and then went right to Kyle and Ashley’s apartment.  We hung out and Ashley made a Chicken Parmesan dish for dinner.  It was fabulous.  Friday we went to the Denver Bronco’s football stadium.  The Sports Authority field in the Mile High Stadium.  He LOVED IT! It was so great to see him walk around the stadium in awe.  He would love to tell anyone about it.  So if you have questions, he’s the one to ask! J  We ate at KFC and then went to the ZOO! Again, I wanted to cuddle with everything that I saw! The only downside to that day was that it was so blasted hot outside.  Walking around the park was a little too hot for me, but they were so pretty and so much fun to look at.  I absolutely loved it.  We went back to the apartment and immediately left to go eat at Qdoba – it’s a Mexican restaurant and its was also, very delicious.  We watched the Colorado Rockies beat the Minnesota Twins at the Cores field.  Saturday we went to Mt. Evans.  It’s 14,258 feet about sea-level.  I was seriously crapping my pants the entire drive up, and the entire drive down.  It was so nice to see Kyle and Ashley that weekend and be able to have an enjoyable time together.

These two pictures were taken at the Bronco Stadium -- Devin's favorite part!

The 24th was so much fun too! We went to Juanito Bandito in Bear Lake.. seriously! The funniest thing ever invented.  I love him.  His Spanish accent and his stretchy – pants.  Best thing ever.  We went to Evanston WY that night and stayed in this great hotel.  Derik, Devin and I got to swim in the pool, just the three of us.  It was great! The next morning we woke up and drove to Park City – we went moose hunting through the Uintah’s.  I’m pretty sure I saw one.  I’m positive!  We got to Park City and went shopping at the outlets.  We then went on the Gondola. HOLY CRAP! Scariest thing ever.  I cried.  Like I seriously got mascara on Devin’s shorts because I was so scared. I mean we thought we were at the top of the mountain, there was a huge sign that said WOW! (making you think that you were at the top) but NOPE! Drop off into a ginormous canyon.  I bawled.  But I made it down okay so I guess I’m alright.  We went to the hotel which was gorgeous! Dev and I had our room and the bed was so comfy! I have never slept in a bed that comfy.  I slept til 8! Anyways, after we went to the hotel, I went up yet another lift.  We went to the Alpine Slide which was a blast! I had never been before so it was a little scary at first, but again, I lived J We had pizza from Maxwell’s pizza that was right underneath our hotel room and then Dev and I went swimming.  It was an indoor/outdoor pool and we had the whole outdoor part to ourselves.  It was beautiful to swim under the stars in a heated pool! Over all we had a great month of July!

Father's Day Weekend!

Friday we went to a rodeo! A RODEO! In June?! I know, I thought it was a litte early too.  We decided it would be fun to take Allie and Jordan with us and spend a little bit of time with them.  Some of those cowboys are freaking IN-SANE! One of the bull riders who was getting ready to ride, I swear to you about died.  He was in the shoot and all at once you hear a bang and look to find that this cowboy is being pulled off the bull and the bull is being pushed into the next shoot.  CRAZY! Also, concessions were SO cheap!! Popcorn was like 50 cents.  A hamburger was like $2.00.  A HAMBURGER! They even had Gossners Milk.  Rootbeer is my favorite J

Saturday we were planning on waking up and going to Golden Coral for breakfast.  I woke up at about six and was like “OH! I have an hour to sleep in” yeah no.  I slept til 8:45.. Devin is so sweet for not waking me up, however I was a little mad that he didn’t!  We both wanted to go there and didn’t get to.  So we decided to go into town anyways and find Father’s Day gifts.  We went to 8 stores.  Smiths, the mall, Shopko, Lowes, north Walmart, Home Depot, back to Smiths and then to the South Walmart.  But we finally found stuff for our dads.  YAY!  We bought this super cool cook book for us.  All about grilling because, well…we love grilling.  They are FABULOUS!  We also bought TIKI TORCHES!! They are so cute and fun and they were so awesome.  We set them up with a blanket in the middle of them and played board games for a little bit Saturday night.  They are so pretty.  I am absolutely in love with them.

Father’s Day was really great! We had lots of good food and lots of fun memories with our families.  Hope everyone else enjoyed their day too!

Life in México--part 1

July 27, 2011 my awesome family moved to Queretaro, Mexico.  Wait. What? Yes I know.  It was my senior year in highschool and I packed it up and moved with my family to Mexico.  Not New Mexico.  The old one.  ;)

People always ask me if that was awful moving my senior year. My answer? Naw.  I didn’t enjoy Mt. Crest.  I didn’t really have my “best friend” that I would hang out with.  In fact, I’d call Lindsie every day during lunch and talk to her while she watched Mickey Mouse Club House.  It would be fun.  I would graduate down there.  I would learn Spanish.  I would get a “new start” at making friends and making these awesome adventures.

                                                          our back yard in Mexico

Boy was I in for a surprise!  We arrived in Mexico on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 between 8 & 9 PM.  Oh did we look silly! 7 Americans, one poodle, 7-8 suitcases and 14 carry-on’s. (2 per person) You can only imagine what we looked like trying to get through security. (Also know that this was the first time that Allie, Kendal, Jason, Lindsie and I had ever been on a plane..let alone going through security..) They opened every one of our suitcases and went through them, they went through our carry-on’s, and poor Tallie! (our escapoo) She was looked over for like a half an hour! Our real estate lady, Nalleli, met us at the airport.  This is where we were introduced to the “kiss”.  The kiss is how they greet people.  When you are saying hello, you put your cheek with theirs and make a kiss sound.  Again, imagine our poor faces.  We were being violated! Ha just kidding.  But it was definitely weird!  After my mom, dad and Nalleli figured our car situation out, my dad and I drove to Walmart while Nalleli took my mom and siblings to our house.  Dad and I were on a bed hunt.  We bought 7 air mattresses. (the extra small ones on accident too..) It was so weird.  I walked into Walmart and people were staring at me like they’ve never seen a white girl before.  Granted, I am extra white, but still!  I felt so small.  I couldn’t read a single thing in the store and the prices were high! A mattress was $150.00 pesos. (roughly $15.00 USD) It was just so different.  I have never been the minority before && I didn’t like it.
                                                       eating tacos, July 27, 2011. 11:30 PM..ish

When we got back to our house in Jurica, Nalleli, my mom and the kids where there, but there was no light.  Elsa (who was another agent of some sort) was there trying to help us get the lights on.  We got the lights on and realized that we were starving! We hadn’t eaten since grandmas house that morning.  (we spent the night in Brigham with Grandma Karen because we had to be up so early.) Nalleli took us to Juriquilla were we experienced our first midnight, street tacos.  Legit, authentic tacos.  Oh they were so good! Nalleli told us that they put lime on everything, which is 110% true! It took me a while to get used to lime, I had put some on my tacos that night and my tummy didn’t exactly agree with them.  Again, people stared.  There sat 7 Americans with their dog, eating tacos, speaking English, at 1 AM.  When we left the taco place (which btw was one of our most FAVORITE places to eat throughout our stay there) we had to stop and get some toilet paper from some random store on the way home.  We got home, filled the air mattresses and went to sleep.  What a long, exhausting day.

                                                                        at the airport
                                                       Grandma Karen and Allie
I woke up to Jason and Lindsie jumping on my air mattress, telling me to come and look at my bedroom.  Since I was the oldest, I got my own room.  It was on the other side of the house, away from the other bedrooms.  I was in the maids quarters. Clearly my room was already the coolest.  I remember walking through the house just amazed.  It was so beautiful.  4 bedrooms.  4 ½ bath.  Beautiful yard.  Walking outside and looking down our street was so cool.  Everything was in bloom and it smelled amazing.  We didn’t have any food.  We didn’t have a fridge yet, so dad took Allie and I to McDonalds to get food for everyone.  The first time I had a Big Mac was at the McDonalds in Mexico.  We got lost on our way home, but thankfully my dad got us back! We went to the store to try and find the things that we needed since we wouldn’t have our stuff that we shipped from home, for 3 months.  We bought a fridge, and we bought some food.  Our first week was hectic, but awesome. All I remember thinking is: I could really learn to love this place.

Moto Vu :)

This weekend was such a blast! (06/06/14-06/08/14)  Devin spent Thursday and Friday at the Missionary Training Camp that the Wellsville and Mendon Stake do every year.  He did it last year and has loved it both years!! He loves helping all of these kids understand the reason that they are serving the Lord for 2 years.  Besides, he’s so great with them, and they love him.  How could he not have fun?  After his training camp on Friday, he picked me up from home and we went to Moto Vu. (The outside movie theater in Ogden)  We stopped by Carl’s Jr.  I LOVE their Teriyaki burger. Oh my heck, it is SO good.  We took our food to the drive in and ate it there.  Dev found a new game to play on our phones while we were waiting for it to get dark.  It’s called Farm Heroes Saga.  It’s VERY similar to Candy Crush.  Only it’s with vegetables and they have cute smiling faces on them too.  It’s rather addicting and Devin even likes it! He doesn’t get into those kinds of games very much, but he really enjoys this one!

Edge of Tomorrow is such a great movie.  I would definitely go and see it again.  I won’t tell you anything about it cause I think you should go and see it.  However, Godzilla.  BORING! I watched the first half hour of it and then I fell asleep.  I slept for a good hour of it but then I got so freaking cold that I just kinda laid there snuggled up to Devin to try and keep warm.  Didn’t really interest me or Devin.  But since Devin is such a sweetheart, he waited until the movie was over to leave because he didn’t want to be rude to the other viewers.  Me? I would have left during it.  It was that bad.  We got home at about 2:40 AM.  After brushing our teeth and getting ready for bed, it was a little after 3 that we both finally fell asleep.   Saturday was such a drag! We didn’t get out of bed until 9.. Our get up and go..got up and left. We cleaned the house a little bit.. ate a little bit..did this and that but before I knew it was 1! Where did my day go??  Grandpa Don had asked us if we could go put some of the sandbags in the pasture to kind of stop the water from overflowing..while on our way down there Devin found a calf! Bad thing about it? It’s black. With a white face.  What??? All our cows are red angus.  Not black.  (one of the bulls from the guy who owns the other part of Dry Lake, got onto our side while they were in heat and well…you know.) Its kind of a funny looking calf.  But cute nonetheless

Church was good.  I was still so tired from Friday night that my feet drug all day long.  I’m the music leader for primary.  We are learning I Love to See the Temple in American Sign Language.  It’s really cool that these kids have the opportunity to learn that!  Lunch was great.  Chicken roll ups.  Oh they are soo good! I completely understand why they are one of Devins favorite meals.  They’re DELICIOUS!  We made Dutch Oven Potatoes for my family and they were fabulous.  As always.  Over all we had a really fun weekend! Can’t wait for next weekend!!

Dads birthday & work dinner!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!! (06/04/1970) Yes. My dad is now 44. FORTY FOUR! He is SOO old! ;) haha just kidding dad.  But I would just like to wish him a very happy birthday and I am so grateful to have a dad like him.  He supports me in everything I do. (mostly..) He is so sweet and caring and funny and he's usually always right..  I swear I am like the only 20 year old (&& married none the less!) that still kisses her dad before she leaves his house.  Feliz Cumpleaños! Te amo con TODO mi Corazon <3

Last night (June 4th) Devin and I went to my first dinner with my new job.  I absolutely love the girls that I work with.  My boss, Tracey, is fabulous.  She is so great! We went to Elements.  Have you ever been there?! HOLY TOLITO! GORGEOUS! Oh it was so much fun.  We sat outside in the patio in the back corner. Back corner? I know what you’re thinking.  You got stuck in the back corner.. haha no way! That was the most beautiful spot I think I have ever eaten at.  The trees were behind us, you could hear the little river (that sounded amazing..!) it was in the shade and very comfortable.  The cutest thing I think I saw was the ducks! There were a bunch of ducks with their ducklings just walking around our table.  We’d feed them bread and watch them fight for it. Oh they were so darn cute!

The reason that we were at Elements was because we were celebrating accomplishments that some of these girls have made.  The years and hard work that they’ve put in to our job.  They were so excited and so happy to be there.  They deserved it!  Lynette was celebrating 15 years, Tiffany 7, and Lisa and Ashlee were celebrating 5.  That is so awesome.  These girls are so much fun to be around and we had so much fun just talking, getting to know each other better, and just enjoying each other’s company.

ABOUT US!

So I thought I would try and give this blogging thing a try.  Not that I know a whole lot about it, but I figured, what the heck? How bad could it be? Any help would be much appreciated ;)

I’m going to use this more of like a journal.  But that’s open to the world. If people read it, great! If not, I don’t mind J  I want to keep track of Devin and I’s new journey that we’ve started together and I think this would be one of the most fun ways to do so.  I love typing, why not put it to use?

I figured the most appropriate thing to write about first, would be about Devin and I.  I mean, that's the name of the blog right? The Fabricius'.  Devin and I met on March 10, 2013.  Depending on which one of us you ask, our stories on how we met are a little different.  I say Facebook, he says a mutual friend.  Actual truth? A little bit of both.  I had commented on one of my friends pictures of her and her boyfriend. Devin saw my comment and asked this friend (Annie Maughan) how well she knew me.  She said very well and she then texted me asking me if she could give this friend of hers my number.  Naturally I asked her what this friends name was.  She replied: Devin Fabricius.  How in the heck do you say that last name?! What do I do next? I Facebook stalk him of course.  Super cute.  Heck yes he can have my number! Annie told me that she had given him my number. I waited ALL day for him to text me! No text came..bummer! Later that night as I was moving a car (the one time that I didn’t have my phone attached to my hip) Devin calls. My mother answered.. weird? He kinda thought so.  Talking to him on the phone, I was already so impressed! This kid just CALLED me. CALLED! No way that happens anymore. He was so polite and invited me to go to the singles ward with him that following day.  Of course I said yes! How could I not?

Devin picked me up at 10:35 sharp! Not a minute late.  I was so nervous I was shaking in the recliner! I remember opening the door and just instantly fell inlove. (you’ll think I’m crazy, but I told my mom when we got home from church that I was going to marry that boy!) I just loved his eyes.  && that smile he gave me? HOLY COW!! He opened every door we entered, he helped me in his truck, and he was so polite!! We went to church and it was SO hard to focus! All I wanted to do was talk! I wanted to know everything I could about this handsome man.  Church came to an end and I was so hoping that he didn’t want to stay for the linger-longer. It was a whole meal! (I mean.. no offense single people, but that’s a little over the top.. don’t ya think?) He didn’t want to stay either.  In fact, he was thinking the same thing.  WHEW! We talked the whole way home.  I was so sad when he dropped me off.  All I wanted to do was sit and talk and talk and talk! Good thing we made plans to hang out later that week.  But we’ll save that story for later.  I’ll have to write about those in sections.  As for now, bedtime is calling my name!
